GANGES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — As police continue their search for a man whose wife was found dead in their home near Fennville, family members are hoping for closure.
48-year-old Sara Knight was found dead in her home in the 6200 block of 116th Avenue in Ganges Township, near Fennville on Tuesday morning. Police said she had been strangled and her husband, Harold Knight, who goes by “Butch,” had not been seen or heard from since.
“I didn’t believe it was true. He’s always been there for my mom and he’s quiet but nothing like this. We never thought in a million years he would ever do this ever,” said Roxanne Harris, the daughter of the victim.
Harris said Butch had always been distant, and the couple had just moved back from out of the state.
“They had a rough patch the past few months, but they just moved back from Maine and so we just thought financially, mom was trying to find a job and things were a little tight, but nothing to kill her over,” said Harris.
Investigators believe Butch called 911 on Tuesday saying he harmed his wife on Sunday and was leaving the country. Authorities said Sara Knight’s son identified the voice of the 911 caller as that of Butch Knight.
Police released more information Friday saying Butch purchased a gun and 40 rounds of ammunition the day before Sara was found dead.
“I understand what he’s done, but I don’t want him to take his own life. We’ve had enough, just turn himself in,” said Harris.
Harris described her mother as a loving person who was always there to help others.
“My mom was always one phone call away, always just one phone call away. It didn’t matter where she was at. We talked every day,” said Harris.
Harris hopes Butch comes forward to help their family understand what could have possibly gone wrong.
“I just need to know. I need to know what my mom could have done so horribly that he had to kill her for it. Why would he have to take my mom? It just doesn’t make any sense,” Harris told 24 Hour News 8.
Harold Knight is described as about 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds with hazel eyes. He may be driving a light green 2009 Subaru Forester registered to his wife with Michigan license plate GM74A.
Anyone with information about Harold Knight’s whereabouts or other information about the death is asked to call the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office at 269.673.0500 or Silent Observer at 800.554.3633.
