PAW PAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Police believe an elderly man may have died after suffering from a medical emergency before he was rear-ended by a semi-truck.

Police say Eugene Howard, 83, of Portage was traveling eastbound on I-94 near the 58 mile marker at a slow rate of speed when a semi-truck rear-ended the car he was driving around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

The car went off the highway and came to a stop in some deep snow on the south side of the road.

Witnesses, who were first on scene, said he was slumped over in the passenger side of the vehicle possibly suffering from a medical emergency not related to the crash.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected to have played any role in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
