GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The application deadline is approaching for the new museum school in downtown Grand Rapids.
The new school will open inside of the Grand Rapids Public Museum for sixth graders starting this fall.
The Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education is expected to approve the hire of the museum school’s new principal at their meeting Tuesday night.
The school district is currently working with a design architect and Steelcase to renovate a few classrooms on the upper level of the museum.
John Helmholdt, the Executive Director of Communications for Grand Rapids Public Schools, said there’s a lot of interest in the new school.
The school district has already received 40 applications. There will be 60 available spots for sixth graders.
“The students that apply here and are learning here, they’re going to be part of a downtown renaissance that’s happening,” Helmholdt said.
The deadline for parents to apply is February 27, parents will need to go through an interview process and sign a parental engagement pledge.
