CALEDONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday morning in southern Kent County.
A deputy on scene told 24 Hour News 8 a Chevy Impala was heading west on 92nd Street when the driver, 59-year-old Thomas Robert Martino from Hastings, failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit by a Chevy Blazer traveling north on Whitneyville Avenue. The Impala went airborne before landing in a nearby driveway.
Aero Med was initially called to the crash just before 6:30 a.m. Monday, but was later cancelled.
Authorities told 24 Hour News 8 Martino died on scene. Authorities said he was in cardiac arrest when they arrived at the scene, but it’s unclear whether he had a medical issue before the the crash occurred.
The driver of the Blazer, 48-year-old Ronald John Smith from Middleville, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Both directions of Whitneyville Avenue from 84th Street to 92nd Street were shut down for approximately four hours while police investigated the crash. The road has since reopened.
A sergeant with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
