GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) It seems everyone has a connection to cancer, but a lot of people have difficulty defining what it is. Dr. Mark Campbell, an oncologist with Cancer and Hematology Centers of Western Michigan, helps define it.

What is Cancer?

  • Cancer is unregulated growth of cells. Causes cells to start growing in different places in the body where they might normally not.

What Causes Cancer?

  • Inherited genetic mutations
  • Environmental/lifestyle choices
  • Ionizing radiation
  • Toxic chemicals, tobacco
  • Diet, obesity
  • Random genetic mutations

What Can I Do?

  • Take advantage of early detection and screening
