Charges filed in teen’s overdose death on New Year’s Eve

WATERVLIET, Mich. (AP) — A prosecutor in southwestern Michigan has filed criminal charges against five people in the death of a 16-year-old boy who died of a prescription drug overdose at a New Year’s Eve party.

Mason Mizwicki died after consuming methadone at a house in Watervliet in Berrien County. Three teenagers are among the five people charged Friday.

Prosecutor Michael Sepic says the prescription drugs belonged to 36-year-old Tara Teitsma, who is charged with providing alcohol, methadone and Xanax. Forty-year-old Donald Jewell is charged with misdemeanors. The teens had gathered at his home.

Teitsma’s bond was set at $75,000. A hearing is scheduled for March 5 to determine if there’s enough evidence to send her case to trial.
