MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) – A Maine woman who scammed an elderly man out of tens of thousands of dollars has been extradited to the Muskegon County Jail.
Jessica D. Travers, 20, has been charged with larceny by false pretenses over $20,000. A preliminary exam is scheduled for March 9. She is currently in jail on a $250,000 cash bound.
Michigan State Police say Travers met the elderly Muskegon man on a flight from Detroit to Virginia and convinced him that she was a cancer patient with two children who was struggling to pay her medical bills.
She may have taken close to $170,000 from the victim, according to MSP.
Investigators discovered Travers was actually spending the money on such things as makeup from Gucci and Christian Louboutin shoes.
Before being extradited to Muskegon County, she was in jail in Baltimore, Maryland on charges of unlawful possession of a motor vehicle and larceny over $20,000.
Travers was previously featured on “Dateline” in a May 2013 sting operation. She posted a fake ad on Craigslist saying she was 35-years-old and interested in meeting an older man if he would give her $7,500.
NBC’s Chris Hansen and a producer went undercover as relatives of an older man who was interested in meeting Travers and then exposed her scam.
