Teen stable after apparent accidental shooting

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Police in Battle Creek are investigating after a teen was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

When officers arrived at a home in the 100 block of Battle Creek Avenue they discovered a 16-year-old with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition where he underwent surgery.

According to police, there were numerous teens in the home when the shooting happened who said the victim accidentally shot himself.

However the victim told police a man wearing a mask entered the home and shot him.

Initially, no one in the home would tell police where the gun was. Police later located the gun, with an obliterated serial number, in a field across from where the shooting happened.

One of the teens admitted to discarding the gun after the victim was accidentally shot.

Police are still investigating whether it was a self-inflicted accidental shooting or an accidental shooting by one of the teens in the home.

Everyone who was in the home when the shooting happened was interviewed by police detectives, and no one else is being sought for questioning.

An additional investigation is ongoing to find where the firearm came from as well as a possible weapons violation.
