NILES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Two stretches of highway south of Niles were shut down for a time Thursday after an excavator on a trailer struck an overpass.

A truck carrying a Caterpillar excavator was headed north on M-51 around 9:30 a.m. when the boom of the excavator hit the US-12 overpass, according to Michigan State Police.

The girders of the bridge were damaged. The extent of that damage was not clear Thursday afternoon.

As the truck carrying the excavator stalled, diesel fuel leaked onto the road. The Niles Township Fire Department was called in to help clean it up.

M-51 was closed in both directions between Bell Road and South Street. Eastbound US-12 was also shut down. All lanes were back open by around 3 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation by the MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.
