2 hospitalized following Newaygo house fire

A home in Newaygo is a total loss following a fire Thursday night. (March 12, 2015)

NEWAYGO, Mich. (WOOD) —  A woman was airlifted to the hospital following a house fire late Thursday night.

Firefighters at the scene told 24 Hour News 8 the fire started around 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the 3300 block of East 56th Street.

Fire crews said a man was pulling the woman out of the home when they arrived to the scene.  The woman was airlifted to the hospital and the man was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Five departments responded to the fire, which was was hampered by weather conditions.

Firefighters said a fire hydrant was frozen and they had to go up a long, muddy and slushy driveway to get to the home.

The home is a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
