MONTCALM TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Montcalm County sheriff’s deputies are investigating after an Amish horse and buggy swerved into the path of a pickup truck Thursday morning.
It happened around 7:30 a.m. on Fitzner Road in Montcalm Township, according to a Montcalm County Sherriff’s Department news release.
Investigators say the buggy was heading southbound when it swerved into the path of a northbound pickup truck.
The horse died as a result of its injuries. The buggy driver, 27-year-old Andrew Miller, was taken to a local hospital, and then was flown by AeroMed to Spectrum Health, the release said.
The pickup driver, 54-year-old Del Ray Christensen, was not injured in the crash.
Deputies believe the horse tack may have been incorrectly connected, causing the horse to go into oncoming traffic when the buggy driver tried to stop the buggy.
Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash.
