GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Thursday marks the celebration of Cesar E. Chavez’s birthday and to commemorate it, a social justice march and community gathering took place along Grandville Avenue in Grand Rapids.Cesar E. Chavez march GR 031915

This year, the committee to Honor Cesar E. Chavez selected Mayor George K. Heartwell to honor.

Community leaders, officials and students marched down Grandville Avenue shouting “Si puede” in Spanish, which means “Yes we can!”

Thursday was the 15th annual march in Grand Rapids to honor and commemorate Chavez’s work in the Latino community.

During his life, Chavez made several visits to Grand Rapids in support of improving working conditions for migrant workers who worked in the fields.
