Man throws stolen, loaded gun during police chase

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A man is facing several charges after leading police on a chase and stealing a handgun.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were responding to several reports of shots fired in the area of Clinton Avenue and Race Street around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday when officers noticed a suspicious vehicle in the 1000 block of Clinton.

When officers approached the vehicle, one man fled on foot. He then threw a loaded semi-automatic handgun while attempting to run away from police. It was later discovered that the gun was stolen.

He was also in possession of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine when police arrested him.

The 18-year-old Kalamazoo man is facing several charges including carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, felony firearm, and several drug related offenses. His name is being withheld pending arraignment.
