GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) He was born and raised in Traverse City, but Jared Kohler now travels into Jordan and Iraq as a photojournalist covering the Syrian refugee crisis.

Kohler reveals both the human and political side of the crisis through the lens of his camera. He’s back in West Michigan after speaking for the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan on the refugee crisis. Kohler says he wants people to understand the refugees are people like the rest of us who just have a different fate. Many of them are middle class professionals and war caught up to them. Right now, there are five million refugees outside Syria and seven million displaced inside Syria.

Kohler spoke for part of the World Affairs Council’s Great Decisions Series. The next speaker is Aarti Shahani on Monday, March 30 at 6 p.m. “Privacy:  Is it a Thing of the Past?” will be at Aquinas College’s Performing Arts Center. Members are $10 and future members are $15.
