OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (WOOD) — A new report ranks Ottawa County as the healthiest county in Michigan.
The 6th annual County Health Rankings, which was released Wednesday morning, ranked 83 counties across the state for healthy people. The annual rankings show where counties do well and where there are opportunities for improvement.
Since 2014, Ottawa County improved or maintained in 85 percent of the 35 indicators that make up the ranking including longer life expectancy, higher child and adult immunization rates, low rates when it comes to smoking and obesity, high activity levels and more moms seeking prenatal care. Ottawa County has taken the number one or number two spot since 2010.
According to the report, Ottawa County could improve in areas such as lowering binge drinking, teen pregnancy and youth depression.
Three other West Michigan counties also made the top 20: Allegan County ranked 13, Kent County is 17, and Ionia County came in at number 20.
Overall, Michigan ranks 34 in the nation for healthiest state.
