ASSYRIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An 18-month-old boy from the Nashville area was killed Wednesday in an accident involving a small skid-steer loader.
Michigan State Police troopers on scene called the incident an “unfortunate, tragic accident.”
It happened around 1:30 p.m. outside a home in the 8000 block of Lacey Road west of M-66 in Assyria Township, south of Nashville.
The toddler’s father was operating the skid-steer, MSP said. He and the child’s mother were using the small type of front-end loader to try to move a dog house. The mother moved to steady the dog house, and neither she nor the father realized their son was in danger until he had already been run over.
“The whole family was in the backyard,” Michigan State Police Lt. Rick Pazder said. “The mother was with the 1-and-a-half-year-old toddler and unfortunately the toddler just got away from her and was run over by the skid-steer.”
MSP troopers responded to the scene to investigate the accident, which is standard procedure.
Pazder told media Wednesday that this “a devastating time” for the toddler’s family and asked that their privacy be respected.
