NEW YORK (MEDIA GENERAL) – It’s only been 24 hour since Comedy Central named relative newcomer Trevor Noah as the successor to Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show.” Now, old Tweets are resurfacing and causing a backlash against the South African comedian.

Tweets from 2009, 2010 and 2011 reveal jokes are the expense of woman and Jews.

Tuesday, the Anti-Defamation League which fights anti-Semitism, commented on Noah’s past jokes wishing Noah success on “The Daily Show” while “urging him to ensure the show remains funny and irreverent without trafficking in bigoted jokes at the expense of Jews.”

Abraham Foxman, ADL National Director, said, “We need humor, perhaps now more than ever, and we hope that he will build in Jon Stewart’s great legacy.”

“We understand that comedians often use humor to poke fun at stereotypes and to push the envelope of political correctness,” Foxman said. He went on to say most of Noah’s jokes seem to fall in this category.

“We hope he will not cross the line from legitimate satire into offensiveness with jokes calling up anti-Semitic stereotypes and misogyny,” said Foxman. “We hope that ‘The Daily Show’ remains funny and irreverent with trafficking in bigoted jokes at the expense of Jews, other minorities and women.”
