ALLEGAN, Mich. (WOOD) — The preliminary hearing for a man accused of fatally shooting a woman and her children, including his own son, before allegedly setting their Dorr Township home on fire has been postponed Tuesday while he undergoes a competency examination.

Corey LaValley, 32, faces three murder charges in the deaths of his 33-year-old ex-girlfriend Deb Sheppard; Sheppard’s daughter, 12-year-old Emma McComber; and Sheppard and LaValley’s son, 10-year-old Corey LaValley Jr.

LaValley also faces one count of second-degree arson and one count of felony firearms possession.

Authorities say LaValley shot the three victims early March 10 and then returned later to set the mobile home on fire with the victims inside.
