Driver, 16, freed from vehicle after crash; 3 hospitalized

NILES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to rescue a 16-year-old driver who was trapped in their car after a two-vehicle crash in Berrien County.

The crashed happened Tuesday on US-21 and US-31, according to Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say a 2002 Jeep, driven by Robert Lockamy of Buchanan, was heading eastbound on US-12 when a 2004 Volkswagon, driven by a 16-year-old Grand Rapids resident, pulled out in front of the Jeep.

The Volkswagon, which was exiting U-31 and turning onto westbound US-12, took a direct hit in the driver’s side door.

The 16-year-old driver’s mother was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

All three people involved in the crash were taken to the hospital. Lockamy was released hours later, deputies said.

The condition of the 16-year-old and passenger are unknown at this time.

The crash remains under investigation.
