RUTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was killed and another seriously hurt in a Sunday night motorcycle crash west of Hastings that wasn’t discovered until late Monday morning.
Officers with the Barry County Sheriff’s Office said they think the crash happened around 10 p.m. Sunday in the 1900 block of W. State Road near Hammond Road, just east of the Hastings Airport in Rutland Township.
Authorities say the motorcycle was headed north when it left the west side of State Road along a curve and landed in a ditch.
The wreck was discovered by two passersby at around 11:30 a.m. Monday.
Zackary Rosenberger, 19, was driving the motorcycle and survived, but was badly injured. He was airlifted from the scene in critical condition.
His passenger Jason Roe, 27, was killed. The sheriff’s office says Roe was not wearing a helmet.
Roe’s family members said they think the pair was headed home when the crash happened.
Recently married, Roe was a father to two young girls who family members say he loved very much.
“He loved his little girl and his wife and everybody around him,” said his grandfather Douglas Roe. “He was just an outgoing boy… We all enjoyed him. It’s just one of those things where he thought he was just going for a ride and he never come home.”
