2 arrested following police chase in Portage

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Two people were arrested after leading police on a chase in Portage early Wednesday morning.

A Portage Public Safety officer was attempting to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation as it pulled into Milham Meadows Apartments at Oakland Drive and Milham Avenue around 3 a.m., but the driver ignored the officer and kept on going.

The officer then learned the registered owner of the vehicle had a warrant for their arrest.

The vehicle fled and drove northbound on Oakland Drive at a high speed.

Another officer happened to be in the area at the intersection of Oakland Drive and Kilgore Road and was able to lay down a spike strip which flattened one of the tires.

A third officer from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety was able to flatten the remaining vehicle’s tires at Oakland Drive and Howard.

The suspect continued to drive on flattened tires, but eventually surrendered without incident at Church and Frank Street.

The driver, a 28-year-old Kalamazoo man, was arrested for fleeing and eluding and a warrant. The passenger and registered owner of the vehicle, a 20-year-old Portage woman, was also arrested on a warrant.
