IONIA, Mich. (WOOD)– A four-legged member of the Ionia Department of Public Safety is getting extra protection.
K-9 Blocker received a bullet and stab-proof vest Wednesday, according to a post on the Ionia Department of Public Safety’s Facebook page.
The gear was paid for by donations from the fourth grade classes at Jefferson Elementary School in Ionia.
The students raised $950 for the Michigan-made vest, which was made possible by the nonprofit group, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.
Blocker became the Ionia Department of Public Safety’s first K-9 officer in August 2014. The 2-year-old German Shepherd is trained to sniff out drugs, find missing people and track suspects.
Since 2009, Vested Interest in K-9s has provided protective vests for more than 1,349 law enforcement dogs nationwide.
Blocker’s vest will be embroidered with the message, “Donated by Jefferson Elementary 2015.”
