MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — A Muskegon teen pleaded guilty to killing her newborn baby girl last year.
Jessica Brewster, 17, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in court on Friday. She was originally charged with open murder but took a plea deal.
The baby’s body was found buried outside a senior housing complex in Muskegon on Nov. 10 with the umbilical cord still attached. Records show the baby had been buried for nearly a month after she died.
Michigan does have a “safe haven” law, which allows parents to leave a child up to 72 hours old at an emergency service provider, like a hospital, or police or fire station.
Brewster’s attorney would not comment on whether Jessica knew about the law before the baby’s death, but said her family supports the law and wants other new parents to be aware of it in the future.
She is expected to be sentenced in the next 30 days.
