GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Jared Ward is the top men’s finisher for the Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K and Lindsey Scherf the top women’s finisher.
Ward, a 26-year-old from Provo, Utah, finished with an unofficial time of 01:15:54. Scherf, a 28-year-old who hails from High Falls, NY, finished with an unofficial time of 1:26:36.
This year’s 25K featured a race within a race. The women started about 12 minutes before of the men — the average gap between the gender’s finishing times. With the playing field statistically leveled, a $1,000 bonus was offered for the overall winner of the race.
It wasn’t until just before the finish line that the men caught up to Scherf, who was far ahead of the other women. Ward managed to overtake her in the very final stretch. That means he’ll get the extra $1,000.
Christo Landry, 29, of Charlotte, NC finished the race second overall with a time of 1:15:02. Scherf finished third overall.
