Police: Man shoots, kills wife during argument

WAYNE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man is facing murder charges after police say he shot his wife during an argument.

Police received a 911 call regarding shots fired from a home in the 24000 block of Flanders Street in Wayne Township, two miles east of Dowagiac, around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday.

When Cass County sheriff deputies arrived at the home they saw a 9-year-old girl coming out of the home followed by an older man later identified as the victim’s husband. Neither were injured and both surrendered to police.

Once inside the home, officers found the body of Laura Jean Stinebeck, 42, of Dowagiac. They say she had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators say there was a verbal argument between the couple prior to the shots being fired.

The victim’s husband was arrested and is being held at the Cass County Correctional Facility. He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on a charge of murder and attempted murder at which time his name will be released.

An autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The 9-year-old daughter has been placed with family friends after being examined at the hospital.
