UTICA, N.Y. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Griffins needed a win Tuesday night to stay in the Calder Cup Playoffs, but they didn’t get it.
The Griffins fell to the Utica Comets 2-0, and the Comets took the series four games to two.
War Memorial Stadium in Utica was sold out for Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, which the Griffins were hoping to win in order to force a Game 7 and stay in the running for the Calder Cup Finals.
The Comets now advance to the finals, where they’ll play Eastern Conference champs the Manchester Monarchs.

Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland has said Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill is on his shortlist to take over for Mike Babcock, who is moving to Toronto. After Tuesday’s game, Blashill didn’t say outright that he would be leaving for Detroit — but what he did say made it seem like he may be.
“We’ll see what the future holds, but what I can say with great confidence is this has been an unbelievable experience for me. The three years with the Griffins has been great,” he said. “The city of Grand Rapids and West Michigan is a really big part of my home and I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”
Official word on whether Blashill will take over in Detroit could come next week.
