Sophia, 8, was selected to participate in a softball camp run by the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team.

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) There are a lot of amazing kids in West Michigan. One of them, a young softball player from Hudsonville, is flying to California to take part in an exclusive camp put on by the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team.

The family of eight-year-old Sophia Howard learned about the program after seeing it on the Today Show. The family reached out to find out how they could apply. Sophia submitted a video and they found out in February that she is one of just 20 children in the U.S. picked to attend the camp.

Sophia plays in a regular softball league even though she is missing her right hand. She taught herself how to catch and throw the ball and swing the bat. She says even though it was hard and sometimes slows her down, she rises to the challenge and never considered quitting.

During softball camp, Sophia will play softball, meet other children playing with disabilities, go whale watching, and visit Disney Land.
