‘Pure Michigan’ pays off for Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)—The voice of Tim Allen lured more than 750,000 people to Grand Rapids last year, a new survey finds.

Longwoods International found the local Pure Michigan TV commercial featuring Allen’s voice led to 756,600 visits to Grand Rapids last year; that’s 42 percent higher than the year prior.

The survey also found the advertising campaign generated more than $206 million in spending by visitors.

Experience Grand Rapids and a state grant covered the $1.7 million cost of creating and broadcasting the advertisement, which aired both nationally and regionally.

The price tag was 25 percent higher than the previous year, but led to a 28 percent increase in spending over the same time period.

The president of Experience Grand Rapids says Longwoods International is currently studying the potential long-term economic benefit of Michigan’s award-winning Pure Michigan tourism campaign.
