Man killed after crashing vehicle into tree

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo man who crashed his vehicle into a tree after fleeing from police on Sunday has died.

Around 4:30 a.m., an officer noticed a car driving the wrong way on N. Westnedge Avenue near Frank Street.  After the driver turned on Drexel Street, the officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, according to a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety news release.

When the officer turned on his lights and siren to pull over the vehicle, it fled at a high-rate of speed. The officer did not chase after the vehicle, the release said.

The driver, 27-year-old Donwaun Casanova McFerrin, traveled several blocks before crashing into a tree at N. Westnedge Avenue near Willard Street. He was the only person in the vehicle when police arrived at the scene, according to the release.

McFerrin was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
