Fire in basement of Portage apartments

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — One family was displaced by an apartment fire in Portage early Sunday.

The fire broke out around 1:35 a.m. at an apartment building in the 6200 block of Independence Drive.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find black smoke coming from the front door of the apartment. They found the fire in the basement of the building and soon put it out.

Adjoining apartments were evacuated. No one was hurt.

Apartment complex management is finding housing for the family displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Along with the Portage Department of Public Safety Fire Division, fire crews from Oshtemo, Texas and Comstock townships responded. They cleared the scene before 4 a.m.
