Sheriff’s Office: Resident interrupts home invader

KEELER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Van Buren County authorities are looking for the person who broke into a home west of Decatur on Friday.

The home invasion happened around 12:45 p.m. Friday in the 86000 block of 67th Street south of Territorial Road in Keeler Township., according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

The thief is believed to have gotten inside by removing a screen from a window on the first floor. Authorities say footprints found at the scene indicate the homeowner interrupted the thief before he could get to the second floor of the home, and that he then ran out the back door.

A sheriff’s office K-9 was called in to track the suspect, but could find him because he is believed to have gotten into a vehicle near the rear of the home and taken off. The sheriff’s office said witnesses indicated that vehicle may have been a small, red SUV or blue pickup truck.

The sheriff’s office will be sending some evidence to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab, it said, but did not specify what that evidence is.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 269.657.3101, Crime Stoppers at 1.800.342.7867, or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100. Tips can also be texted to the sheriff’s office to CRIMES (274537) with the keyword VBCTIP or submitted online.
