BIG RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a juvenile sustained serious injuries in a single-car crash believed to have been caused by a drunk driver.
The crash happened around 11:45 a.m. Monday on Woodward Avenue west of 220th Avenue in Big Rapids Township, west of the City of Big Rapids, according to the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office says a westbound vehicle crossed the centerline and went off the road, came back onto the road and crossed both lanes before going off the other side of the road and hitting a tree.
A passerby took two juvenile passengers to the hospital. One sustained serious injuries and the other minor injuries.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, a 34-year-old man, was taken to the hospital via ambulance and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. After he was released from the hospital, he was arrested.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
It was not immediately clear exactly what charges the driver would face. His relationship to the juveniles was also not immediately known.
