GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)  — A 61-year-old man riding a bicycle was hit and killed by a vehicle Sunday night.

It happened just before midnight near the intersection of 28th Street SE and Englewood Avenue SE in Grand Rapids.

According to Grand Rapids police, a 21-year-old man was driving home from work when he hit the bicyclist in a dark area of the roadway. Officers said 61-year-old Earl Rhodes of Grand Rapids was unresponsive when they arrived at the scene and was pronounced dead.

GRPD said the driver couldn’t see Rhodes because of the clothing he was wearing, the lack of lighting along that stretch of road, and weather conditions. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
