Sophia, 8, was selected to participate in a softball camp run by the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team.

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — A Hudsonville girl who was born without a hand attended a weeklong camp in California where she played softball with veterans amputees.

The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team Kids Camp was held last week in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Sophia Howard, 8, of Hudsonville was one of 20 children from around the country invited to the camp. She told NBC Los Angeles that being part of the team gave her confidence.

“I look around at every single kid and they have disabilities like me. When you believe in yourself you can do it,” said Sophia, who was born without a right hand.

Sophia and her family heard about the program on NBC’s “Today.” She applied to go and was accepted in February.

Sophia plays in a regular softball league here at home. She taught herself how to catch and throw a ball, and swing a bat.
