GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Blue Bridge will be illuminated with a rainbow of color to commemorate the recent same-sex marriage decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Starting on Thursday, July 2 through Friday, July 10 the Blue Bridge will be rainbow-lit, but on the Fourth of July it will be beaming red, white and blue in honor of Independence Day.
On the Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. Facebook page it said the color change will also commemorate “all the good ongoing work in Grand Rapids to build an equitable and inclusive city for all.”
“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the anniversary of our nation’s independence than to also acknowledge the freedom that came from the Supreme Court’s historic decision,” said Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell in a DGRI Thursday news release. “Washing an iconic Grand Rapids landmark in a rainbow of colors and also in a traditional red, white and blue motif on our nation’s birthday is most appropriate to express that our community is welcoming and inclusive to all.”
