Boat burns on Grand River in Ottawa Co.

A boat caught fire on the Grand River in Ottawa County on July 4, 2015.

CROCKERY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A boat went up in flames on the Grand River east of Grand Haven on Saturday morning.

The boater told the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office that he recently bought the 18-foot Century and launched it from Conestoga Grand River Campground, southwest of Coopersville. He intended to warm the boat up before picking up passengers.

While in the middle of the river, the boater said, he heard what was described as a “pop” from the engine and then saw flames when he removed the engine cover. He used the boat’s fire extinguisher, but could not put out the fire.

The boater then jumped off the front of the burning boat and into the river, after which he was picked up by a fellow boater. He was not hurt.

The empty boat drifted about a quarter of a mile downstream to the area of Riverside Park, becoming fully involved in flames.

Emergency responders arrived around 11:40 a.m., and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office fire boat and Robinson Township Fire Department worked together to put out the fire and bring the boat ashore.

Photos provided by the sheriff’s office show the boat is a total loss.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
