Whitecaps rally in 8th to beat Captains

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The West Michigan Whitecaps came back on a two-run homer to win Monday.

Playing at Fifth Third Ballpark in unincorporated Comstock Park in the first half of a home-and-home series, the Whitecaps beat the Lake County Captains 3-2.

The Captains were leading 2-1 in the eighth inning when Whitecaps right fielder Mike Gerber, a Midwest League All-Star, knocked it into the Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Deck for his sixth home run of the season. Ross Kivett and Gerber scored to give the Whitecaps the 3-2 lead they held onto until the end.

The Whitecaps play the Captains again at noon on Tuesday. The series then moves to the Captains’ home field at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.
