The scene after a minivan struck two pedestrians on July 18, 2015.

ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich., (WOOD) — Two Allendale residents were hospitalized Saturday evening after being hit by a minivan.

Police say 21-year-old Bryce Kuiper was driving his 2000 Dodge Caravan in reverse on Commerce Drive in Allendale Township after the vehicle’s transmission went out. According to a police report, he was attempting to take it to a nearby repair shop.

Two pedestrians, 57-year-old Matthew Baker and 44-year-old Linda York, were walking on the east side of Commerce, having just left a nearby McDonald’s on Lake Michigan Drive.

As Kuiper’s van, still traveling backward, approached the pedestrians, he panicked and stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, striking the walkers, police said.

Baker was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital in serious condition and York was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Kuiper was cited for careless driving.
