GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Detroit-based Slows Bar BQ opened its Grand Rapids location Thursday morning.
The barbecue joint announced in the fall of 2014 it would open a new location at the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids.
It was originally slated to open in the spring but the opening was pushed back to August. The doors officially opened at 11 a.m. Customers can enter through the door on Ionia Avenue at Logan Street SW.
Slows Bar BQ has been serving up its famous barbecue in Detroit for a decade, credited with revitalizing an area neighborhood due to its success.
The Grand Rapids’ location will serve a similar menu including ribs, pulled pork, smoked turkey and brisket, with a to-go service option.
“We set this up a little differently than what we do in Detroit, it’s more of a market-style. So guests will be talking to the guys cutting the meat and have a lot of interaction with choosing what they want on their plate,” said Brian Perrone, the co-owner of Slows Bar BQ. “The plan was to move people through quickly and ensure that everyone gets a good experience.”
The restaurant can seat about 140 people and offers both indoor and outdoor seating on a first-come first-serve basis.
The exact hours are still being decided on, but for the time being it appears Slows Bar BQ will stay open until 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends. The owners may decide to extend those hours in the future as the restaurant does feature a full bar.
The original Slows gained national attention on Man V. Food on the Travel Channel.
