Man dies after being hit by car in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man died after he was hit by a car in Grand Rapids early Sunday.

The crash happened around 12:50 a.m. on 28th Street SE west of Madison Avenue. Authorities said 52-year-old Jimmie Lee Walker of Grand Rapids was crossing the street headed north when he stopped in the center lane to allow for a westbound car to pass. When he continued north, he was hit by another car headed westbound, according to a release from the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Walker was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later from the injuries he sustained in the incident.

The driver of the vehicle was not hurt and was not believed to have been speeding or drinking, police said.

“We are still trying to ascertain or understand or find out if the victim was under in the influence, but at this point, the drivers were not,” GRPD Sgt. Terry Dixon said.

The crash remains under investigation.
