KDPS: 1 arrested after shots fired, foot chase

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo police say they arrested one man and recovered a handgun after shots were fired early Sunday.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says one of its officers heard gunshots while on patrol in the 800 block of Simpson Street, near W. North Street, around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Officer Kyle Vosburg got out of his cruiser to investigate and saw three people running away. He chased them and saw one throw away a handgun that had been tucked into his waistband, according to a Sunday release from KDPS.

After continuing to chase the suspects to the nearby 800 block of Woodbury Avenue, Vosburg managed to catch the man who threw away the gun, KDPS says. The other two suspects got away.

The gun was later found to be a loaded 9 mm handgun.

The man who Vosburg arrested, a 24-year-old from Kalamazoo, was jailed on charges of resisting and obstructing arrest, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm.

There were no reports of any injuries.
