Driver in stolen vehicle from Arkansas arrested in Van Buren Co.

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Dowagiac woman who allegedly stole a vehicle in Arkansas was arrested in Van Buren County after she tried to hide from police.

A Van Buren County sheriff’s deputy saw a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of County Road 681 and Red Arrow Highway around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

When the deputy pulled behind the vehicle — a red, 2002 Pontiac Sunfire — it immediately went into a nearby gas station parking lot in an attempt to hide from the deputy.

The deputy ran the vehicle’s license plate and found the vehicle to be stolen of Little Rock, Arkansas on Sept. 9.

The driver and two passengers were detained while a K9 unit searched the vehicle. Authorities found what appeared to be heroin, methamphetamine, Hydrocodone as well as drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

The 36-year-old driver was arrested for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The passengers were interviewed and released.

The suspect is being held at the Van Buren County jail.
