Officer assaulted; KDPS seeks suspect

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police in Kalamazoo are searching for a suspect who assaulted a public safety officer on Thursday.

Police received a report around 11:20 a.m. of a man following a 14-year-old girl in the area of Division and Washington Streets in the Edison Neighborhood. The girl was walking to a store when the suspect began following her. When she exited the store, he was still there and continued to follow her. She called 911.

When officers arrived at the scene in the 1200 block of Mills Street, the suspect immediately fled on foot. Officers gave chase, jumping several fences and then eventually cornering the suspect behind a garage, according to a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety news release.

The suspect then assaulted the officer, and continued to flee. Another officer used his Taser, but it was ineffective. The suspect was able to flee the scene, the release said.

The suspect was last seen in the 1200 block of Race Street. He is described as a black man around 6 foot 2 with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black varsity style jacket, black pants with gray boxer shorts and a black knit cap, according to the release.

The girl was not injured. The officer received a few cuts and bruises.
