GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — New Grand Rapids Griffins head coach Todd Nelson is trying to make the most of the limited practice time before the season opens on Friday.
The team took the ice on Tuesday at Van Andel Arena.
Veterans Andy Miele, Brian Lashoff and Mitch Callahan all cleared waivers and rejoined the team. Nelson said having those familiar faces back is a big advantage, but that even they will have a learning curve.
“I think it might be a bit easier because these guys are familiar with each other; there’s not too many new editions,” Nelson said. “I think the biggest thing is for them and I to develop a relationship together. Right now, they’re still trying to figure me out, I’m trying to figure them out. We’re going to have to develop that trust in each other.”
The Griffins open the season on Friday against Bakersfield, Calif., and then play in San Diego on Saturday.
