FBI warns college students of phone scam

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The FBI is warning college students to be on alert for a phone scam.

The FBI says scammers claiming to be a FBI agent or part of the U.S. government tell students they need to pay delinquent loans, taxes or even overdue parking tickets.

Sometimes, the caller even threatens the students that they won’t be able to graduate or will be arrested.

The telephone number used by the scammer is displayed as a number of an FBI field office, the release said.

The FBI reminds people that they do not call people demanding money and to never give out personal information to callers you do not know.

If you have received a similar call, you can file a complaint at the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
