EATON COUNTY, Mich. (WOOD/AP)– Investigators say a deadly crash on Interstate 96 led to a second fatal wreck on the highway hours later.
The first crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Sunday on I-96 in Eagle Township.
The Associated Press reports a 55-year-old woman from the Grass Lake area died when her car crossed the highway median and smashed into a westbound vehicle.
The Clinton County sheriff’s office said the woman was thrown from her car and died. The Lansing area couple in the other car was seriously injured.
Eaton County deputies said the crash backed up traffic on I-96 for hours, leading to a second deadly crash on westbound I-96 just north of Saginaw Highway.
Authorities say the driver of a Ford pickup truck couldn’t stop in time for traffic and rear-ended another vehicle, sparking a chain reaction crash involving another four vehicles.
A driver involved in the chain reaction crash, 46-year-old Sharon Schafer of Grand Ledge, died at the scene. Another three people were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Westbound I-96 reopened around 2 a.m. Monday.
