ORANGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Investigators say a 20-year-old man killed when his vehicle smashed into a tree was trying to outrun a trooper.

The trooper discovered the crash around 2 p.m. Monday on Hinds Road just south of  E. David Highway in Ionia County’s Orange Township.

Michigan State Police said the vehicle matched the description of a car that sped off during a routine traffic stop earlier in the day, sparking a pursuit by an Ionia County Sheriff’s deputy. The deputy alerted other authorities in the area to the driver, who got away.

About 20 minutes later, a trooper spotted the suspect’s vehicle at the corner of Hinds Road and David Highway.

Police said when the trooper pulled up to the driver, he took off, driving into a corn field before looping back around onto Hinds Road, where he veered off the road, hitting a tree.

The driver, 20-year-old Derik Alan Eash of Saranac, died at the scene.

The case remains under investigation.
