KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — Police have identified the man who was shot and killed by a Kentwood police officer.

Authorities say Timothy Richard Arnold, 47, pointed a gun at Officer Jonathon Carter who then fired, killing Arnold.

Police were called to the Sutton Club Apartments in the area of 60th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue SE just after 11 p.m. on Oct. 21 following reports that a 47-year-old resident of the complex had threatened to kill himself.

According to Kentwood Police Chief Tom Hillen, one of the officers went around to the outside of the apartment to see if he could see any movement inside. Officer Carter stayed in the hallway, which accesses multiple apartments.

Moments later, police say, Arnold came out into the hallway and pointed a handgun at Carter who then shot him.

Carter is a six-year veteran of the Kentwood Police Department. He was placed on administrative leave immediately following the shooting and will be returning to an administrative assignment this week, according to Chief Hillen.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.
