GRANT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Oceana County authorities say tips from the public helped them identify the man who was caught on camera running over a property owner with an all-terrain vehicle.
The incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 5 in the 7600 block of S. 108th Avenue in Grant Township, east of Rothbury, according to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.
Cellphone video taken by the property owner shows the two men getting into an argument. In the video, the property owner tells the ATV driver he’s trespassing on private property and that police are coming. The driver eventually hits the property owner with his ATV before speeding off. Deputies say the property owner suffered minor injuries.
The sheriff’s office released the video on Nov. 10 and asked for the public’s help to identify the driver of the ATV.
Thursday, the sheriff’s office said multiple calls that came in almost immediately after the release of the video led investigators to the suspect, a Montague-area man. Authorities said that when they tried to contact the man to interview him, he retained a lawyer who advised against it.
The case has been handed over to the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office, which will decide what, if any, charges are appropriate.
The sheriff’s office earlier said the ATV driver could face multiple charges, including trespassing, assault and malicious destruction of property.
