Man killed after bull attack near Sparta

ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 60-year-old man has died from his injuries after being attacked by a bull at farm near Sparta, according to a news release from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when employees at Spartan Farms, located at 11116 Pine Island Drive in Sparta, were trying to load a bull into a trailer. The bull ran away and into a nearby barn where it attacked the victim, hitting his chest several times.

Employees were able to get the bull away from the victim and out of the barn.

Aero Med was called, but the victim, Thomas William Hammond, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

Kent County Animal Control also responded and didn’t find any violations, according to the release.

Hammond was a former soccer coach and graduate of Sparta High School, according to Sparta Public Schools superintendent Gordie Nickels.
